Hi there! Welcome to the Luke & Ashley blog, a journal about our lives, our beautiful couples, and their stories we get to tell. Stay a while and do say hello if you please!
This newborn puppy shoot is long over due! Okay but first let me tell you a story. A couple of years ago, we photographed a small backyard wedding. This wedding was different in many ways, but one of the biggest reasons is that our kids actually came to the wedding. They were invited and had an amazing time making new friends, riding golf carts, and meeting Berry. Berry was an old golden retriever who stole the heart of our youngest. He was smitten over her and we heard about her for days which turned into weeks. He became obsessed with having a golden retriever just like Berry.
Now. Let me tell you. We already had one dog at the time. A little Pomeranian Yorkie. If you know anything about little dogs is that although they might be little, they make theirselves known to everyone. We personally were not in the market for another dog!
He was convinced he was going to get a golden retriever for his birthday. Unfortunately it didn’t happen and we had one sad seven year old that year. We made up for it with an awesome pool party and lots of legos! We were fortunate to tie him over for about a week!
Then the asking began again. Persistently. He would ask for a golden retriever puppy. Over and over again. The thought crossed our minds maybe for Christmas but as Christmas was quickly approaching and a big out of town trip was coming, it just was not ideal timing.
Christmas came and again, our little guy upset that no golden retriever puppy was under the tree. That was a hard one for us and honestly we felt like terrible parents.
Come January, our boy decided he was going to start earning money so he could buy his own puppy. Golden Retriever of course.
He began to knock on the doors of our gracious neighbors and ask to pull weeds and who knows what else. He sold cookies out of our pantry to the neighbors and more.
Just wait until you see this newborn puppy photo shoot!
This momma couldn’t take it any longer! It was time. I did a lot of research. We even visited the shelters. I asked him if he wanted to go to the shelters and this 7 year old told me no. He said he wanted a Golden Retriever and if he went to the shelter he wouldn’t be able to resist the dogs in there.
I finally found a breeder outside of Richmond who had great recommendations.
Come May, it was time for him to go pick out his puppy. We drove the 2 hour drive and when we arrived we were met with the cutest little things ever! We wanted to take them all home. He climbed in their little fence and sat with them all. Holding each one. The momma was near and we loved getting to meet her. As he held them all none of them seemed to be “the one.” He just couldn’t choose.
Right about then the owner said she had the runt elsewhere and if he wanted he could see her. She brought him out and when he held her he said this is it! He picked out his puppy and he was so adamant that the owner put a yellow ribbon around her so he would know which one was her.
The plan was for us to pick her up for his birthday or right after. Sure enough 2 months later and 1 day after his 8th birthday, it was time to get Roo! ( That was the name he chose for her.)
Roo will be turning one year this next month and yes I do plan on having a happy birthday photoshoot! ( Just don’t tell my other dogs!) I am so glad I took the time do her very own newborn puppy photo shoot. Our boy feeds her everyday, picks up dog poo, loves on her all the time, and tells me over and over again even a year later that he is so glad we got him Roo. It was the best birthday present ever. I ask him if she was worth the wait and he always grins and tells me YES!
So here are some pics that we took when we jut brought Roo home. I love the photos with him and Roo and will cherish them always.
I am so glad that we got Roo but if we didn’t find her we would have convinced Ryan it was time to rescue. I love our local SPCA and if you are looking to adopt I definitely recommend checking out your local SPCA. Once the coronavirus is over, our oldest is going to start volunteering there. They have amazing volunteer opportunities.
