Hi there! Welcome to the Luke & Ashley blog, a journal about our lives, our beautiful couples, and their stories we get to tell. Stay a while and do say hello if you please!
Foundations are everything! You can have a beautiful home but with a cracked foundation it can quickly become a nightmare! The same goes for business. It is important to build a solid foundation when it comes to running your business and understanding how and why you do certain things. For photographers, understanding lighting is a basic and very important foundation.
Photography is fun. It is creative and technical all in one. Throw in a crunched wedding timeline and it can also be stressful!
This is why it is so important to know and understand lighting. We love Natural light. Especially golden hour where everything glows and the light is amazing! However, let’s be honest. How often do we get to shoot at Golden Hour? On a wedding day if you’re lucky to get that pretty light and the allotted time maybe 20 minutes at the most? The rest of the day your light is constantly changing. Getting ready in dark rooms, First Look at noon, dark ceremony spaces, and of course the dreaded dark reception hall.
As much as we love natural light and love shooting in it, there are times when you need to bring in extra lighting.
This is going from creative to technical. And we have to remember as much as our profession is creative, there is also a very technical side. We owe it to our clients to embrace this and grow our abilities beyond what we think we are capable. We owe it to our couples to learn this side of the business to give them pictures that will compliment their day and bring them back to that moment.
We also owe it to ourselves to stretch and reach out of our comfort zone. I promise you will surprise yourself on what you can do!
Learning OCF is a lot of trial and error. And it is not always good to do trial and error on the wedding day! This is why we believe in teaching a simple class that encompasses both understanding and experimenting with your lighting setup. We say your lighting setup because it is important to learn to use what you own. How to make the most of the equipment you already have.
